Volleyball, tennis notch wins

Melrose-The Lady Dutchmen topped Benson in a four set match last night.  Scores of the games were 25-14, 20-25, 25-13 and 25-17. The team played a balanced game with a number of players contributing. Abby Hinnenkamp had 20 kills, Greta Klaphake 20 assists, and Taryn Van Heel 20 digs. Melrose competes in the Hill-Murray Class AA Showcase today and tomorrow in Burnsville.

The Lady Dutchmen tennis came away from Sauk Centre with a 4-3 win. The doubles teams swept their competition losing only two games in the four sets.  Madison Worms’ three set victory was the lone singles win for Melrose.

The Dutchmen and Lady Dutchmen soccer teams both fell yesterday. The girls were defeated 8-1 by Zimmermann in a contest at Melrose. Mackinze Wolbeck scored the lone goal.

The Dutchmen had three goals by Francisco Cervantes, but it was not enough to prevent a 4-3 loss.

Tonight the football team travels to Rockford.

Dutchmen’s double delight


Both the Lady Dutchmen and Dutchmen were smiling after the two teams claimed first at the Melrose Invite Tuesday.

Melrose-The Melrose Dutchmen and Lady Dutchmen both claimed first place at the Melrose Invitational cross-country meet Tuesday.

Turning some of their best times of the year on the flat course, Melrose all of its point earners, on both teams, finish in the top 15. The top three Dutchmen (Nathan Budde, Preston Poepping and Leo Braun) all finished in the top 10. Nathan Budde won the boys race leading the entire race. Ashley Herdering claimed runners-up honors to Sauk Centre’s Kate O’Brien in the girls’ race.  Herdering, Allison Pohlmann and Chloe Ellering all finished in the top 10 of the girls’ race. This was the first time since cross-country was brought back to Melrose that both teams claimed first place.

Melrose also had a win from the volleyball team as it downed ACGC in three games. The team played well and spread its offensive attack around.

Pierz dominates football game

The Pierz Pioneers controlled the line of scrimmage the start of the game and downed Melrose 46-6  Friday at Melrose.

The Pioneers 39-0 before Melrose got on the scoreboard. Brady Birch’s catch of an eight -yard pass from Reegan Nelson prevented a shutout.

The Pioneers dominated the offensive and defensive lines, holding Melrose to 49 yards rushing.  Nelson did pass for 95-yards.

The Lady Dutchmen tennis team was also in action to today. They faced Montevideo in a game that was moved to today because of rains yesterday. The match was suspended after about an hour of play because of rain.

The Lady Dutchmen volleyball team fell 3-1 to Montevideo last night at Montevideo. Melrose played well and kept the sets close, but could get the winning points.
