Diocese denies St. Mary’s restoration proposal

 

Bishop Donald Kettler is directing the Church of St. Mary to build a new facility, according to a letter sent to Fr. Marv Enneking April 10. The letter denies the parish’s proposal to restore the historic church after it suffered a fire in March 2016.

Melrose Knowledge Bowl

Melrose Gold and Melrose Purple teams, both came on strong in the oral rounds of the state Knowledge Bowl contest Friday in Brainerd

Melrose Gold came out of the written round in sixth place. In the five oral rounds they consistently scored high and finished in third place at the end of the day.  The Melrose Purple team was 24th out of 24 following the written round.  They then took over their oral rounds scoring and finished the day in 11th place.

Champion Cabbage


Chloe Schaefer received a $1,000 for her growing the champion cabbage in the Bonnie Plants’ Third Grade Cabbage growing contest. Making the presentation was Minnesota Agricultural Commissioner Dave Frederickson.

Chloe Schaefer, a third grader at Melrose Area Public Elementary School, was named the champion cabbage grower from Minnesota in the Bonnie Plants’ Third Grade Cabbage program.  Last year Chloe, the a third grader, grew a 13.8 pound cabbage. It was a selected as the champion cabbage in the state for that contest.  Minnesota Agricultural Commissioner Dave Frederickson presented the check and other items to Chloe for her efforts.   More on the event appears in the March 29 issue of the Melrose Beacon.
