Blommels appreciate heartfelt support

Rural Freeport–A heart-shaped rock was found May 9 by Melrose Area students, neighbors and family picking rocks on Gene and Marlene Blommel’s dairy farm near Freeport.
The Blommels fi gure 17-year-old son Darin had a hand in helping find that heart.
“It caught their eye,” said Gene on June 2, sitting at the kitchen table with Marlene and son, Andy.
To them, it’s a sign that their youngest child is OK. OK, because on Oct. 31, 2014, this young man, known to many as Butch, passed away following an ATV accident the day before. In an instant, life changed for Darin’s family and friends.
“You gotta look at life as a gift,” said Gene, wiping away tears, “and cherish every day.”
