Man dies after going through ice on skid loader

 Rural Freeport-A Krain Township man was rescued Tuesday, Feb. 28, 

after the bobcat he was driving went through ice covering an abandoned 

manure pit and later died at Hennipen County Medical Center.

     At 1:53 p.m. the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office, along with 

Upsala rescue, Melrose Ambulance  and Life Link helicopter, responded 

to the incident at 23798 445th St. in Krain Township.  Duane Herzog, 

46, of rural Freeport, was operating a skid loader when it went 

through the ice.  The ice was covering an abandoned manure pit located 

on Herzog’s farm site.  The skid loader was completely submerged, 

trapping Herzog inside.

    Herzog had been submerged approximately 20 minutes before being 

pulled from the skid loader.  Local rescue workers were able to get 

into the water and extricate him from the machine.

    He was transported by air to Hennepin County Medical Center, where 

he passed away.
